This is a great place for breakfast (options run from muesli to fry-ups). From 1pm onwards, this is supplanted by a reasonable selection of Mediterranean dishes and the odd special; a Thai curry or lamb with couscous. The café has also become a nerve centre for the locals’ campaign to save its historic street.

	Bar Pinotxo Address La Boqueria 66-67, La Rambla 91 Telephone 93 317 17 31 Public transport Metro Liceu Opening hours 6am-4pm Mon-Sat. Using the freshest of market produce, Pinotxo produces deceptively classy dishes from a spit ’n’ sawdust market bar. There’s no menu but the day’s dishes are invariably excellent, and might include duck magret with figs or a sumptuous tuna stew.

In a picturesque square in the heart of the Barri Gòtic, these must be the most successfully terrace tables in Barcelona. Inside, an old piano and the people produces a friendly atmosphere. Tapas are basic but good, and there are decent own-made cakes.
	Barcelona Travel Bar Address Boquería 27 Telephone 93 342 52 52 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 10am-02pm Mon-Sun. Close to las Ramblas, this is the first bar for tourists. You will find coffees, drinks, bocadillos and other plates.
	Benidorm Address Joaquim Costa 39 Telephone 93 317 80 52 Public transport Metro Plaça Catalunya. Opening hours 17pm-02:30pm Mon-Sun. This old brothel is now a bar with tecno and dance music.

With tables outside overlooking the cathedral square, this is a useful meeting point. Choose from the dozens of fresh and colourful pintxos. The excellent restaurant downstairs specialises in Basque cuisine.

June-Aug 11am-midnight Mon-Fri; 2pm-midnight Sat. Bliss has three spaces: one for lunch; another for rest with sofas and finally tables outside on the tiny Plaça Sant Just. There’s a nice menu at lunchtime, while sandwich, pizza, cakes and cookies are available all day.

Healthy sandwiches, milkshakes, fresh juices, a long list of herbal teas and mate in this friendly and lively café. It’s run as a co-operative and many of the waiters are co-owners.

Nov-Apr 8am-11pm Mon-Fri; 8am-midnight Sat, Sun. The original and well-known Zurich was torn down to make way for the El Triangle shopping centre, but still enjoys a sunny and central terrace on which to while away an afternoon.
	Café d'Annunzio Address Plaça Vicenç Martorell 5 Telephone 93 302 40 95 Public transport Metro Plaça Catalunya. Opening hours 9am-10pm Mon-sat. Coffees, teas, drinks, bocadillos and a really nice terrace to take a nice break on summer and spring are his secrets.
	Café de l'Opera Address La Rambla 74 Telephone 93 317 75 85 / 93 302 41 80 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 8am-2.15am Mon-Thur, Sun; 8am-2.45am Fri, Sat. A Rambla famous place, next to the Opera, it has a long tradition related with it. With two salons upstairs and many of its original fittings, it’s still an elegant place for breakfast or an early evening drink, with a short list of tapas and a long list of beers.

The tables of the Café Estiu are in a quiet Gothic courtyard next to a fishpond and in the shadows of ancient orange trees. On offer is a selection of drinks and light snacks.
	Café Royale Address Nou de Zurbano 3 Telephone 93 317 61 24 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 6pm-02:30pm Thues.-Thurs. 6pm-3pm Frid.-Sat. Close to Plaça Reial, this is a fashion Bar well known as a meeting point.
	Casa Molinero Address C/Mercè 3 Telephone 93 310 33 83 Public transport Metro Drassanes. Opening hours 6pm-2am daily. This old-style tapas bar is an example, with whitewashed walls and rustic decor, of the typically spanish bar. Along with the others on this street, it presents an unreconstructed and very Spanish face. Enjoy the chorizo al diablo and the opaque alcoholic drink known as "leche de pantera".
	Bosc de Les Fades Address Passatge de la Banca Telephone 93 317 26 49 Public transport Metro Drassanes. Opening hours 10.30am-1.30am Mon-Thur, Sun; 10.30am-2.30am Fri, Sat. The ‘fairies’ forest’ is a really particular place. As you grope in the semi-darkness you might chance upon a pointy-eared elf (an escapee from the nearby wax museum) kneeling in silent prayer at a waterfall. Or perhaps you’d care to sup in the castle kitchen, complete with inglenook and hanging cauldron. A very surreal drinking experience.
	Dot Light Club Address Nou de San Francesc 7 Telephone 93 302 70 26 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 22pm-3pm every day. This is an small but lively bar with dj's and films in one of the two salas.
	El Portalon Address C/Banys Nous 20 Telephone 93 302 11 87 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 9am-midnight Mon-Sat. Closed Aug. An unreconstructed bodega with a faded, run-down feel as well as a still discernible rustic charm. This place was created in the 1860s from the stables of a medieval palace. Ever since, it’s been offering traditional tapas and wine.
	El Salon Address Hostal d’en Sol 6-8 Telephone 93 315 21 59 Public transport Metro Jaume I. Opening hours 2pm-2:30am Mon-Sat. A nice place and economic to have lunch or dinner.
	Els Quatre Gats Address C/Montsió 3 bis Telephone 93 302 41 40 Public transport Metro Catalunya. Opening hours 9am-2am daily. This is a Modernista masterpiece and former haunt of artistic Barcelona. Santiago Rusinyol and Ramon Casas painted pictures for it, and the menu cover was Picasso’s first paid commission. It closed in 1903, and was used as a textile warehouse until it was restored and reopened in the 1980s, with reproductions by contemporary artists of the original paintings and it’s still an unmissable stop on the city tour.

	Ginger Address C/Palma de Sant Just 1 Telephone 93 310 53 09 Public transport Metro Jaume I. Opening hours 7pm-3am Tue-Sat. Closed 2wks Aug. A new and happy cocktail and tapas bar. Within weeks of opening, Ginger had a loyal following for its sophisticated selection of wines and food.
	Glaciar Address Plaça Reial 3 Telephone 93 302 11 63 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 4pm-2.15am Mon-Sat; 9am-2.15am Sun. Inside, the high ceilings and old dark wood provide the sort of ambience that resists the vagaries of fashion, but Glaciar’s real known point is its terrace on the Plaça Reial. Locals and resident foreigners still congregate here to meet friends.

	Jupiter Address Jupí 4 Telephone 93 268 36 50 Public transport Metro Jaume I. Opening hours 12pm-2pm daily. Quiet bar full of contemporany art and good music. Cakes, bocadillos and salads will make you fill like at home.
	L'ascensor Address C/Bellafila 3 Telephone 93 318 53 47 Public transport Metro Jaume I. Opening hours 6.30pm-2.30am Mon-Thur, Sun; 6.30pm-3am Fri, Sat. Enter to this original and special bar to take some drinks or either take some tapas.
	La Granja Address C/Banys Nous 4 Telephone 93 302 69 75 Public transport Metro Liceu.. Opening hours 9.30am-2pm, 5-9.30pm Mon-Sat; 5-10pm Sun. Closed 3wks Aug/Sept. An old-fashioned café filled with photos and antiques and with its very own section of Roman wall. The hot chocolate and especially the suïs, topped with whipped cream, is really good; but the xocolata amb café, a mocha espresso, or the xocolata picant, with chilli, are really good, too.

A quiet, unchanged bodega with a local feel. The paintings on the walls are by the Internos, a group of artists who used to meet up here in the 1950s.
	La Vinateria del Call Address C/Sant Domec del Call 9 Telephone 93 302 60 92 Public transport Metro Jaume I or Liceu. Opening hours 6pm-1am Mon-Sat. Closed 1wk Aug. This deep restaurant-bar, furnished with dark wood and dusty bottles, has something of the Dickensian tavern about it, but once inside there’s a music selection and lively multilingual staff. The wine list and range of hams and cheeses is huge and really good.
	Leticia Address C/Còdols 21 Telephone 93 302 00 74 Public transport Metro Drassanes. Opening hours 7pm-2.30am Mon, Wed, Thur, Sun; 7pm-3am Fri, Sat. One of the friendliest, most relaxed bars in the city, with miniature art exhibitions, a sofa and cosy banquettes at the back on which to chat, play chess and chill out to gentle trip hop, lounge and jazz. There’s a good range of simple dishes and own-made cakes, plenty of teas and reasonably priced cocktails.
	Malpaso Address Rauric 20 Telephone 93 412 60 05 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 7pm-2.30am Sun-Thur, 17pm-3am Fri-Sat. Cofeess, teas, coctels, music by dj’s and exhibitions.
	Molly's Fair City Address Ferran 7 Telephone 93 342 40 26 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 6pm-3am daily. Irish pub close to Las Ramblas.
	Pilé 43 Address C/Aglà 4 Telephone 93 317 39 02 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 8.30pm-2am Mon-Thur, Sun; 8.30pm-3am Fri, Sat. From the ’70s vinyl chairs and smoked glass coffee tables to the lava lamps and the pendant light fittings, almost everything in this bar is for sale.
	Rabipelao Address C/Mercè 6 Telephone 93 319 92 31 Public transport Metro Drassanes. Opening hours 9pm-2am Mon-Thur, Sun; 8pm-3am Fri, Sat. This is a tiny, friendly joint, with Andalucian tiling and an assortment of junk hanging from the walls: a bicycle wheel, the guts of a forgotten typewriter, rolls of film and dog-eared books. Intermittent projections slice through the blood-red shadows deep at the back, while staff dole out cocktails and bocadillos.
	Schilling Address C/Ferran 23 Telephone 93 317 67 87 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 10am-2.15am Mon-Sat; noon-2.15am Sun. Schilling is an upstart from the ’90s with windows overlooking the thoroughfare of C/Ferran. Spacious and elegant, with a particularly large gay clientele, it is no longer as fashionable as it was.
	Shanghai Address C/Aglà 9 Telephone no phone Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 7pm-2.30am Mon-Thur, Sun; 7pm-3am Fri, Sat. A saucy little mock-oriental drinking hole off C/Escudellers, Shanghai mixes down-at-heel glamour with laid-back eccentricity. From the tasselled light fittings to the shattered corner of the huge mirror, it’s scruffily beguiling.

A cramped but jolly little joint, with a useful spread of bagels, cakes and more to eat in or take away. The Sunday brunch menu is hugely popular with the local expat community: eggs and bagels; bacon and bagels; pancakes and maple syrup and bagels...
	The Blarney Stone Address Ferran 31 Telephone 93 412 42 91 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 6pm-2:30pm Mon-Thur; 6pm-3am Frid-Sun. Irish pub in the City Center.
	Venus Delicatessen Address C/Avinyó 25 Telephone 93 301 15 85 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours noon-midnight Mon-Sat. Closed 2wks Nov. Sits with marble tables and chequered floors. Staff serve you light meals at any point throughout the day, which makes Venus a useful place to know about.
	Vinissim Address C/Sant Domec del Call 12 Telephone 93 301 45 75 Public transport Metro Jaume I. Opening hours 8.30am-11pm Tue-Fri; noon-midnight Sat; noon-5pm Sun. Owned by the same people as La Vinateria (see above) and run with the same degree of knowledgeable enthusiasm for wine and good food, Vinissim is the daytime option. Painted in warm funky colours and bathed in sunlight, it also has tables outside on the bright Placeta Manuel Ribé.
	Xaloc Address C/Palla 13 Telephone 93 301 19 90 Public transport Metro Liceu or Urquinaona. Opening hours 9am-midnight Mon-Thur, Sun; 9am-1am Fri, Sat. Part café, part deli with a top-notch range of wine, ham, charcuterie and cheese for sale. The tapas are also good, and come in generous portions.
	Xocoa Address C/Petritxol 11 Telephone 93 301 11 97 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 9am-9pm Mon-Sat. There are sublime fruit tarts, cheesecake, tarte tatin and all manner of breakfasty pastries; croissants, magdalenas, brioche and huge Mallorcan ensaimadas. Chocolate is the thing, however, here and in the shop next door.
	Zoo Address Escudellers 33 Telephone 93 302 77 28 Public transport Metro Liceu. Opening hours 6pm-2:30pm Mon-Thur; 6pm-3pm Frid-Sat. Cheap and good dinners until 1am and, after this, a good place to take a drink.
